    Shakespeare…Really

    William Shakespeare

You might think Shakespeare is just a dead guy and isn’t relevant to our society but surprisingly he actually is. William Shakespeare’s poems, plays and language are still important in todays society. Shakespeare’s language is still used in daily life even though we do not notice we use phrases from Shakespeare such as, ‘I’m in a pickle’ meaning a difficult situation, ‘Wear your heart on your sleeve’ meaning to express your emotions openly and ‘Break the ice’ meaning to start the conversation. Nearly 10% of Shakespeare’s 20,000 word vocabulary was new to his audiences. What made Shakespeare’s plays so unique was how his plays and poems were up for discussion. Shakespeare gave the world a cultural reference which effected our society.

Taming of the Shrew / 10 Things I hate about You

The ‘Taming of the Shrew’ is about a girl named Bianca who can’t get married until her older sister Kate gets married, How unfair is that!! Though nobody wants to go out with Kate because she’s a ‘shrew.’ The movie 10 Things I Hate about You is based on the same storyline as The taming of the Shrew. It’s a really good movie 🙂
10 Things I Hate about You is based on Popular, pretty girl Bianca Stratford who has a problem. A family rule forbids her from dating until her unpopular boy-hating older sister Kat gets a boyfriend. A potential boyfriend for Bianca desperately attempts to set Kat up with Patrick Verona, another rebel who tries to catch Kat’s heart. Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You are very similar in many ways, but they have some minor differences. Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You have many of the same characters. The main characters have similar or the same names, such as Katherine – Kat, Bianca – Same, Cameron – Cambiot and Petruccio – Patrick (Heath Ledge , such a hottie). These characters not only have similar names, but have the same behaviors as each other. Shakespeare’s inspired the movie with the idea of strong females, this is shown through Kat. The Play also influenced the movie to have female role models and female rights. Shakespeare invented these rights and role models through his plays which are much respected in today’s society.

    Strong Women (She’s a Man)

Shakespeare introduced female role models such as Kat from 10 Things I hate about You and also Viola from She’s a Man. These two strong women demonstrate how they do not need men in their life. Viola demonstrates her beliefs by what she says and does to become a soccer player. Viola stands up to her coach and the boys soccer team, this shows Viola is strong wiled. The coach says no, so she dresses up as her brother Sebastian, because as her brother she gets more privileges. Viola’s roommate Duke also plays soccer, and has a huge crush on a girl named Olivia. Olivia likes Sebastien, who is really Viola who really likes Duke, it’s really complicated ;).
The movie She’s a Man is based on one of Shakespeare’s plays Twelfth Night, which is based on a love triangle between Orsino being in love with Viola and then Olivia falling in love with Viola who is a girl but dressed as a man. This love triangle is confusing but so cute. Shakespeare created feminist women who are perceptive, confident and cruel, he did this to demonstrate their intelligence while living in a male-dominated society,
Go Shakespeare!! Shakespeare used women like Katerina and Viola to symbolise feminist role models. He also showed our society that teenage girls are powerful and willing to debate for rights. The movie She’s a Man demonstrates how Viola stands up to her Mother for not wanting to be a girlie girl but be a soccer player, a man sport. This movie shows how teenagers will have disagreements with their parents.

    How Shakespeare helps today’s Society

Shakespeare was influenced by the general community, he watched people’s behavior and communications. He demonstrated this through his plays and poems. From these plays directors have became influenced through Shakespeare’s writings and messages he expressed. Through the modern plays and movies we have been taught many of Shakespeare’s messages and haven’t even realised. These movies have become not only popular because of the morals but the entertainment side. Shakespeare is the most quoted writer in the history of the english language.
This is because he transformed theatre by expanding exceptions about what could be a accomplished through the plot, language and genre.
THANKS SHAKESPEARE!! :))
