Hi, my name is James Mortimer and I will be discussing whether William Shakespeare is relevant to students in this day. Many may argue whether William Shakespeare is relevant to the modern day students, but I believe that Shakespeare is extremely relevant to students in this modern day. Shakespeare started something that still goes on in modern day films like comedy, romance, Love, Friendship, Hatred, his famous quotes and his own Shakespearean language, he has even influenced many people to use some of his sayings and actions in everyday life. Even now in this modern day, some of his plays have been re-made such as Romeo and Juliet, and The Taming of The Shrew. Languages used in Shakespeare’s works include things such as puns and oxymoron’s, which are still very widely used today. Not many people may know this but Shakespeare has influence the culture of hip-hop due to his wide use of words and his writing style.

Shakespeare had a wide range of themes that he used throughout his plays but some of his more important themes were love and hate. These themes are relevant to the modern day students because in our life we all experience love and hate. Through these themes that are experienced by almost all humans it allows us to understand his work better because of his wonderful themes. One of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ use themes, which are easy for many people to relate with. Shakespeare’s use of themes that are more relatable is a reason why he is so important to learn in this modern day.

Another reason for Shakespeare being relevant to students in the modern day is because we quote Shakespeare a lot more than some people may realize, sayings used such as ‘A heart of Gold’ and ‘All’s well that ends well’. Here are some more famous quotes that Shakespeare used throughout his time alive. http://absoluteshakespeare.com/trivia/quotes/quotes.htm
These are just some of the quotes that Shakespeare used in some of his 37 plays and 154 sonnets. The language that Shakespeare has used in these plays and sonnets have had a heavy impact on the way the society communicates in this modern day. Shakespeare invented around 1700 of his own words for the English language and many of those words are still well known and used today. Words such as ‘Swagger’ and ‘Assassinations’ are just a few of the words that were created by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s puns and oxymoron’s are still largely used in today’s culture and are still relevant to us in this modern day.

Many of the characters and story lines that we see in a modern day film are actually influenced from Shakespeare’s plays. For example one of Shakespeare’s plays ‘The Taming of The Shrew’ was re-created in 1999 ‘Ten Things I Hate about you’. The similarities between the play and the film are the similar plots, names, some clothes and the quotes they use. The numerous uses of the plots that are almost identical to Shakespeare’s plays suggest that modern day movie producers find Shakespeare’s work important and still relevant to modern times otherwise film producers wouldn’t be making films that are so similar to Shakespeare’s plays.
William Shakespeare influence many things up to this day, but what most people

may not know he also influenced hip-hop through the use of his Shakespearean language and through ‘Lambic Pentameter’ in his sonnets. Through Shakespeare’s use of extremely large vocabulary, puns, and oxymoron’s and through his style of writing he has influenced many famous Hip-Hop artists since the very first time Hip-Hop was created. His use of Lambic Pentameter’s has changed the way Hip-Hop artists perform their songs and has become a very popular style as to how the artist’s songs flow. This shows that Shakespeare is clearly still relevant due to his wide influences in many different types of cultures.

Shakespeare’s use of Characters and story line’s, themes and use of language are still big elements used around the world by many different people. Despite the fact that Shakespeare died under 400 years ago, his works have influenced many humans through the ages and is a clear indication that Shakespeare is still relevant for the modern day students to learn.
